How to Fix Sideways or Upside-Down PDF Scans

Why scans come out sideways

Scanners store the page image in whatever orientation the paper was fed — landscape feed, sideways page. Phone scanning apps guess orientation from the camera angle and often guess wrong. The result is a PDF where some or all pages open rotated, and everyone who reads it has to crane their neck or hit rotate in their viewer.

Rotating in a viewer only changes your view. The file itself is unchanged, so the next person opens it sideways again. The fix has to be written into the document.

Rotate the pages permanently

2. 02Choose the rotation — 90°, 180°, or 270° — for selected pages or the whole document.
3. 03Apply. The pages are rewritten with the new orientation baked in.
